#5 QUARRY

Author: Sojourn

Size: 1,509K

You won’t find Quarry playing in any tournament. There’s no tau cannon and there’s no longjump pack. And that’s just fine by us. Quarry is a map professional enough to mistake for a Valve original and good enough to restore a non-l33t player’s faith in the game itself.

Quarry, a nicely rendered underground mine, features a plentiful supply of two low-tech player essentials: AR grenades and HEV. Learning the "cycle," a circular path through the map’s armor and weapon spots can turn even a high-ping player into an elite dominator.

Quarry is a map with single-player inspiration. Accessing the gluon gun requires a Freeman-like tact: Pulling a switch on the lower level and finding your way to the surface. Quarry’s author goes so far as to suggest that the mine is the source of a viral outbreak and your opponents are mad, infected miners. Infected or not, Quarry’s excellent design and ping-forgiving selections make for a superb fragging experience.
