Video Settings

From the Half-Life menu select Configuration--Video--Video Modes. Half-Life will check your system for the presence of OpenGL and Direct3D video drivers. Many gaming sites recommend OpenGL as the preferred driver. We suggest you test both to find out which one performs best for your system. As any relatively new graphics card can handle Half-Life’s requirements with ease, many gamers suggest a minimum resolution of 800 x 600.

Updating Video Card Drivers

Sierra recommends downloading the latest drivers for your graphics card. Consult the readme.txt file (viewable through Half-Life’s main menu) for known issues.

To gauge your 3D card’s performance in Half-Life, check your frames per second. Type: cl_showfps 1 into the console during a game. 72 fps is Half-Life’s max and 30 fps is recommended as the minimum for smooth gameplay.

The Chumpland staff can personally attest to an improvement in visual quality and framerate following installation of the latest Voodoo3 and ATI Rage Fury drivers. Beware of beta drivers and remember the adage: if it ain’t broke don’t fix it--if you’re averaging 60 frames per second in a standard map like datacore and everything looks good, installing new drivers may be unnecessary.
